Fering Technologies submits LMV bid to build the British Army's next light mobility vehicle

London engineering firm offers the Ministry of Defence a British-made, modular wheeled utility platform to support force mobility and the electrification of the battlefield.

London, UK; 9th September, 2026: Fering Technologies has submitted its bid for the Ministry of Defence's (MoD’s) Light Mobility Vehicle (LMV) programme, the competition to replace the Land Rover and Pinzgauer fleets that have carried the British Army for decades.

The Fering Pioneer is one of the only British designed and engineered vehicles competing in the LMV competition. The vehicle is designed around a modulararchitecture, featuring an ultra lightweight carbon chassis that can be easily reconfigured to meet the nine vehicle variants required by the UK MoD. For maximum versatility, the vehicle can be adapted in the field without specialist tools.

Powered by a hybrid electric system, the vehicle offers an unprecedented 7,010km range, and the ability to deliver up to 60kWh of power for onboard electrical systems and/or deployable field equipment, enabling self-sufficient missions in areas where infrastructure and external logistics support is limited or non-existent. In EV-only mode, the vehicle can operate in complete silence for up to 80km.

Developed to handle extreme terrain, Pioneer features a 4-wheel internal independent air spring variable ride, with 18 bar active suspension, Central Tyre Inflation System, and on/offroad operating modes. Its innovative powertrain delivers 480 Nm of power to each axle. This delivers driving dynamics including a 60% gradient climb, 51° traverse angle and 0.75m step climb. It is fully submersible to IP67.

The vehicle is compatible with heavy duty ring mounts for M-2, MK-47, M-240 and Remote Weapon Station. It is also smoke launcher compatible. It can also be operated remotely for autonomous operations in the field.Weighing in with a curb weight of 1,750kg, gross vehicle weight rating of 3,500kg, maximum train weight of 7,000kg, and maximum payload of 1,550kg the vehicle is air transportable by CH-47, CH-53, C-130 aircraft, and is also low velocity airlift deployable.

The Pioneer and Pioneer X specialist operational mobility variant will be on display on the Fering stand at DVD 2026 (OR-38). It will also be running demonstrations on the off-road track throughout the event.

The Ministry of Defence's Light Mobility Vehicle programme is described in the published tender notice as delivering a common base platform across nine vehicle variants, with the ability to grow the fleet beyond 9,500 vehicles, alongside support, training and post-design services.
